The students learned about the measures taken to eliminate the consequences of the accident in the Gomel Region, where more than 70 percent of the radioactive fallout fell, as well as the devastating impact of radiation on the environment and human health. Particular attention was paid to preserving the memory of the liquidators\u2014plant employees and firefighters who died from acute radiation sickness.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00abThe 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident is not only a memory of the tragedy but also a recognition of the liquidators&#8217; heroism.
