The event was attended by school principal M.V.Chernenko and representatives of Gomel public associations.

Specialist Maya Valentinovna Vashchenko told the students about the date April 11, 1945:

«The date commemorates the uprising of prisoners at the Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany, which occurred on April 11, 1945. As a result of the uprising, more than 20,000 prisoners, over 900 of whom were children, saved their lives. The international community commemorates this day as International Day of the Liberation of Prisoners of Nazi Camps».

She also spoke about the Dulag-121 transit camp for prisoners of war, where over 100,000 prisoners of war and local residents perished, and the Ozarichi concentration camp in the Kalinkovichi district of the Gomel region.

«The Ozarichi camp in the Kalinkovichi district was an atypical camp; there were no buildings on its grounds, and the prisoners were held in the open air». The Nazis rounded up the elderly, women, and children and infected them with typhus. It was a camp where people were used as biological weapons, spreading the disease to the advancing Red Army units. In nine days, at least 20,000 of the 50,000 prisoners died.

The main task of young people is to study the history of their native land to preserve the memory of the high price Belarusians paid for a peaceful sky. Young people must protect their homeland from a repetition of such events, Maya Valentinovna concluded.

At the end of the lesson, the students watched a video about young prisoners of the Krasny Bereg concentration camp, whose blood was taken for wounded Wehrmacht soldiers.

The event concluded with the lighting of candles in memory and a minute of silence.

1-3.
