It commemorates the 105th anniversary of the birth of classic Belarusian writers Ivan Melezh (1921–1976) and Ivan Shamyakin (1921–2004).

The works of Ivan Melezh and Ivan Shamyakin are rightfully considered national treasures. The writers were born in the same year, lived through the Great Patriotic War, and witnessed and chronicled complex historical events. Yet, despite their shared themes, their creative paths and artistic means had their own unique characteristics. Their novels and stories remain relevant decades later, remaining important for every generation of Belarusians. The exhibition features copies of documents from the NARB collection, testifying to their extremely active and multifaceted work and socio-political life: the Resolution of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus and the Council of Ministers of the BSSR on awarding the BSSR State Prizes; the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the BSSR on conferring the honorary title of People’s Writer of the BSSR on I.P. Melezh in 1972; the Resolution of the Supreme Soviet of the Byelorussian SSR on the election of I.P. Shamyakin as Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Byelorussian SSR; I.P. Shamyakin’s personal file, and other documents. Many of the materials are being displayed for the first time.

Literary work was not the only sphere of self-realization for I.Melezh and I.Shamyakin. The writers successfully combined their creative work with high government positions and work as people’s deputies, building the foundations of an independent Belarus through their own example and powerful words. These classic writers played a special role in the development of Belarusian culture, holding important positions on the board of the Writers’ Union of the BSSR and working for the republic’s largest publishing houses.

The exhibition focuses on books that speak of love, humanity, honor, and the Fatherland. Among the exhibits are rare lifetime editions of such masterpieces of Belarusian literature as «Deep Current», «Anxious Happiness», «Heart in the Palm», «The Tradeswoman and the Poet», «The Polesie Chronicle», «Minsk Direction», and many others, tastefully designed and illustrated by renowned artists. Among the most valuable exhibits are books autographed by the creators.

The creative legacy of Ivan Melezh and Ivan Shamyakin has become an inexhaustible source of inspiration for Belarusian cinema. Numerous works by these classic writers have inspired iconic films that have become a treasure trove of national cinema. The exhibition features directors’ scripts for the films «People in the Swamp» by Viktor Turov, «Deep Current» by Margarita Kasymova and Ivan Pavlov, and «I’ll Take Your Pain» by Mikhail Ptashuk, tracing the transformation of literary words into living screen images.

1.
