Lectures were given on the participation of natives of the Vitebsk Region in the creation of the national symbols of Belarus and on the history of the liberation of the Vitebsk region from Nazi invaders, along with a film screening produced by the BGAKFFD.

Elena Bondareva gave a lecture on the history of the national symbols of Belarus. It was noted that natives of the Vitebsk region participated in the creation of each of the symbols.

Belarus was the first country in the world to use a national ornament as an element of its national flag. In 1951, the Supreme Soviet of the BSSR commissioned the Academy of Sciences to create a design for a new flag for the republic. A sketch of an ornamental pattern woven onto a towel by Matryona Markevich from the village of Kostelishche in the Senno District was found in the pre-war archives of the Belarusian Industrial Council. This pattern was called «Rising Sun». Based on this, artist Mikhail Gusev prepared a design for the flag, which was collegially approved in December 1951.

In 1919, Valentin Volkov moved to Belarus. He became a teacher first at the People’s Art School in Velizh, Vitebsk Province (1919–1923), then at the Vitebsk Art College (1923–1929). From then on, Volkov’s entire life was connected with Belarus. In 1926, Valentin Volkov was invited to participate in a competition to design the national emblem of the Belarusian Republic. The competition jury recognized his design as the best, and, with some modifications, this national emblem of the BSSR still exists today.

On September 17, 1955, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus adopted the Resolution «On the National Anthem of the Byelorussian SSR». The music chosen was that of Nestor Fyodorovich Sokolovsky. After Belarus gained independence, the question of a national anthem arose again. Since 1995, the Belarusian anthem has been sung without lyrics. In 2002, a new competition was announced. Composers and poets proposed five versions of the new anthem, including Sokolovsky’s music, with lyrics written by poet Vladimir Karizna.

The liberation of the Vitebsk region from the Nazi invaders began in October 1943. The Liozno district was the first in the Vitebsk region to defeat the occupiers as a result of heavy offensive fighting that took place from October 7 to 10, 1943. It was over the town of Liozno that the first Red Banner in the Vitebsk region was raised, symbolizing liberation from the German yoke. It was hoisted on the dome of the former church by Lieutenant K.F. Kanyshkov, commander of the commandant’s platoon. The newsreel «Liberation of Vitebsk», produced by the Belarusian State Archives of Film and Television (BSAF), contains unique footage of the liberated Liozno region (1943). Deputy Director Tatyana Vladimirovna Buevich shared this story.

1.
