On December 9, 2025, the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Belarus<\/strong> hosted the opening of a documentary exhibition, \u00abThey Fought for Their Country: Belarusian Lawyers during the Great Patriotic War\u00bb<\/strong>. Developed by the National Archives of the Republic of Belarus<\/strong> (hereinafter referred to as NARB), the exhibition was timed to coincide with Lawyer’s Day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

From the first days of Nazi Germany’s attack on the Soviet Union, lawyers rose to the defense of their country. They actively participated in the partisan movement in Belarus during the Great Patriotic War, performing not only combat but also organizational, intelligence, and propaganda functions, bringing their knowledge of law, administration, and education to the establishment and operation of partisan legal proceedings, the fight against the occupiers, and the organization of life behind enemy lines. Their contribution to the restoration of law and order after the liberation of Belarus was no less valuable.<\/p>\n

During difficult times, justice officials, participating alongside the entire nation in the Great Patriotic War, continued to work to improve the state and its legal system. From 1946 to 1948, open trials of Nazi executioners who had committed monstrous atrocities were held in Minsk, Vitebsk, Gomel, and Babruisk. On behalf of the Belarusian people, lawyers condemned these crimes and punished Nazi criminals in accordance with the spirit and letter of the law.<\/p>\n

Today, the work of lawyers is aimed at ensuring justice and the rule of law in society and creating a stable mechanism for enforcing legal norms in the work of government agencies.<\/p>\n

At the exhibition, the NARB presented archival documents: personal registration sheets of partisan personnel; combat and service records; award sheets; the Resolution of the Central Committee of the Communist Party (Bolsheviks) of Belarus on the nomination of employees of the People’s Commissariat of Justice of the Byelorussian SSR for government awards, and others. Through their active participation in the fight against the enemy and their work to uphold the rule of law during wartime, Soviet lawyers made a significant contribution to the common Victory over the most insidious and powerful enemy in human history \u2013 Hitler’s fascism.<\/p>\n
