Approximately 25 percent of the territory of modern Belarus came under foreign occupation. For several years, the troops of the Russian Empire, which included many Belarusians, stubbornly held off the armies of the foreign occupiers, achieving success in a number of military operations.

During World War I, the Headquarters of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, corps and division headquarters, and numerous military units of various branches of the armed forces were located in Belarus. During the war, approximately 900,000 people from the Belarusian provinces were conscripted into military service.

The exhibition displays documents from 1914-1918, including letters from the front written by students of the Rogachev Teachers’ Seminary, lists of military units in Belarus, reports on refugees, foreign prisoners of war, Chinese and Central Asian workers, maps of military operations, and many others.

Sergei Ryndin, Deputy Director of the National Historical Archives of Belarus, spoke about the archival documents on display at the exhibition at a general staff meeting. It was particularly noted that Belarus Publishing House has published the popular science book «The First World War on Belarusian Lands» from the «History for Schoolchildren» series, prepared by the National Historical Archives of Belarus with the support of the Department of Archives and Records Management of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Belarus. The book is dedicated to the lives of the Belarusian population during World War I.

The exhibition presentation was accompanied by a screening of newsreels from the First World War. The final part of the event featured a video presentation titled «AI-History: World War I», produced by the Belarusian State Archive of Film, Photo, and Sound Documents. The video showcases wartime photographs brought to life using artificial intelligence.

1.
