His name is well known to lovers of Belarusian folk songs.

The Belarusian State Archive-Museum of Literature and Art (hereinafter referred to as BSAMLI) houses the Gennady Ivanovich Titovich collection №393, which contains original manuscripts, records of folklore expeditions, unpublished short notes, lecture notes — more than two thousand documents in total. All of them were donated after his death in 1986 by his widow Olga Matveyevna.

G.I. Titovich was the son of a rural teacher. He received higher education in natural science, humanities and music in Vilnius in the 1930s, when Western Belarus was part of Poland. For the young student of Vilnius University and Vilnius Conservatory, the study of folk art became, above all, a search for his national identity and a source of personal inspiration. The archive-museum contains his recordings of Belarusian songs, collected in 1937 in the village of Voidaty near Vilnius, as well as a university certificate from 1939 with permission to conduct ethnographic research.

Since 1946, G.I. Titovich began to actively participate in ethnographic expeditions organized by the Academy of Sciences. He combined this activity with work on the radio, in various cultural institutions, in the People’s Choir of the BSSR, which he created in 1952. In addition, he was engaged in scientific, theoretical and pedagogical activities. Gennady Ivanovich’s ethnographic records contain primarily musical and song heritage, as well as sayings and proverbs, and memories of folk rituals. In 1974-1975, G.I. Titovich worked as a senior research fellow at the Institute of Art History, Ethnography and Folklore of the Academy of Sciences. His comparative studies of folklore of different peoples of Eastern Europe are a model of erudition for modern young scientists.

We hope that the virtual exhibition of documents «Gennadz Tsitovich – a researcher of folk art», prepared by the Belarusian State Academy of Literature and Art for the birthday of the great master, will reflect the human and creative research wealth of this truly extraordinary person.

August 7, 2025 marks the 115th anniversary of the birth of the choral director and musicologist, the creator of the National Academic Folk Choir Gennady Ivanovich Titovich.
