According to the International Nuclear Event Scale, the Chernobyl disaster is assigned the seventh, the highest level of damage caused. More than 200 thousand square kilometers were subject to radioactive contamination, of which 70% are on the territory of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. As a result of the accident at the 4th power unit of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, vast territories of five regions of Belarus were exposed to radioactive contamination to a greater or lesser extent, in which there were 27 cities and 2697 settlements, where more than 2 million people lived. The affected area was 45.52 thousand kilometers.
