Genealogical records are available at all regional archives of the Republic of Belarus.\r\nThey are preserved here in considerable volume except the Mogilev State Regional Archives\r\nwhich lost most of its fonds during World War II.

\r\nThe documents kept at the archives touch upon almost the whole 20th century\u00a0 and\r\nconcern the time when Belarus existed as part of the Russian Empire and part of the Union\r\nof Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).
\r\n
\r\nThere is a wide range of documents concerning activities of various departments (both\r\ncivil and military). Of the most informative sources for genealogical researches are the\r\nvital records and various data on taxpayers, voters, public officials, persons subject to\r\nthe draft, and persons suffered during World War II. There is also some information on\r\nproperty, in particular the records on house ownership. A separate group of records is\r\npresented by household books which contain the lists of villages’ citizens with\r\ninformation on their arrival to the village and departure. There are also archival records\r\nfrom the educational, land, court, and religious archives, as well as archives of\r\ndifferent administrative agencies dating back to the periods of the Polish rule in\r\nBelarus, 1921-1939, and\u00a0German occupation, 1941-1944, and more.

The records are\u00a0 grouped according to\r\nthe average unit in the administrative division of the Russian Empire, Western Belarus,\r\nand USSR: uezds, povets, and districts (raions). \r\n
