Historical background"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"submenu\">\r\n<a href=\"\/en\/?page_id=636517\">Contacts<\/a><br>\r\n<a href=\"\/en\/?page_id=847071\">Description of holdings<\/a><br>\r\n<a href=\"\/en\/?page_id=358261\">Finding aids<\/a>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h2>Historical background<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The Archives was established in August 1919 as an archival repository of the Vitebsk\r\nGubernia (Province) Archival Administration (from 1922 the Archival Bureau). <\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>In 1924, the archival repository was reorganized as the Vitebsk District Division of\r\nthe Central Archives of the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic (BSSR), which was\r\nreorganized into the Vitebsk Historical Archives in 1927. <\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>In 1930, the Vitebsk Historical Archives was reorganized as a division of the Central\r\nArchival Administration of the BSSR. In February 1933, the Vitebsk division was renamed\r\nthe North-Baltic division, and in April 1936 it was made the Vitebsk division of the\r\ncentral state archives of the BSSR.
