Founder of Belarusian scholarly \r\nlinguistics and literary studies. Author of over 700 scholarly papers in \r\nBelarusian, Russian and Slavonic studies, including fundamental works in \r\ndialectology, history of Belarusian language and literature, folklore, \r\nethnography, Old-Russian palaeography etc. His fundamental work \u00abBelarusians\u00bb is the highest achievement \r\nof European Slavonic studies in the late 19th and \r\nearly 20th centuries, a real encyclopaedia in the study of Belarusian language, \r\nliterature and culture.\u00a0 <br>\r\n<br>\r\nMember of the Imperial Academy of Sciences of Saint Petersburg (from 1916, \r\ncorrespondent member from 1901), the Russian Academy of Sciences (1917), the \r\nAcademy of Sciences of the USSR (1925), a full member of the Institute of \r\nBelarusian Culture (later the Belarusian Academy of Sciences, 1922) and the \r\nCzech Academy of Sciences (1929).<br>\r\n <\/p><br>\r\n<p align=\"center\"><b><font size=\"4\">Major events of life and work<\/font><\/b><font size=\"4\"><br>\r\n<\/font><br>\r\n<p align=\"center\"><b>village of Lasha, Grodno district, Grodno province, Russian \r\nEmpire (1861-1862)<\/b>\r\n<br>\r\n(now Grodno district, Grodno region, Republic of Belarus)<\/center>\r\n<p align=\"left\">\u2013 Yefim Karsky was born on 1 January 1861 (20 December 1860, Old \r\nStyle).<br>\r\nFather Fyodor Nikolayevich Novitsky \u2013 psalmist at Lasha Church and teacher in a \r\nfolk school at Lasha.
