{"id":12,"date":"2006-05-18T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2006-05-18T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/archives.gov.by\/en\/?page_id=12"},"modified":"2006-05-18T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2006-05-18T00:00:00","slug":"genealogy-family-history","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/archives.gov.by\/en\/welcome-to-the-archives-of-belarus-website\/genealogy-family-history","title":{"rendered":"Genealogy\/Family history"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/images\/gen4.jpg\" width=\"125\" height=\"183\"\r\nalt=\"Genealogy tree of the noble family\" align=\"left\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"10\" vspace=\"8\"> <\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The Belarusian archives hold a big number of documents which are used in genealogical\r\nresearch and can be of interest to those who search their family history (parish\r\nregisters, census records, records of institutions, religious communities, nationalities,\r\nand various types of vital records).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>For periods roughly before 1920 these records are kept at the<a\r\nhref=\"\/en\/?page_id=503226\"> National Historical Archives of Belarus in Minsk<\/a> (the\r\nformer Minsk, Mogilev and Vitebsk provinces of the Russian Empire and a part of the Grodno\r\nand Vilno provinces) and the <a href=\"\/en\/?page_id=377130\">National Historical Archives of\r\nBelarus in Grodno <\/a>(the former Grodno and Vilno provinces).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>For periods roughly after 1920 the records can be found at <a href=\"\/en\/?page_id=6\">regional\r\nand local state archives<\/a> and also in the archives of civil\r\nregistry offices <a href=\"\/en\/?page_id=673706\">ZAGS<\/a>. \r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>At present our website gives information on the following types of genealogical\r\ndocuments: \r\n\r\n\r\n  <li><a href=\"\/en\/?page_id=360168\">parish registers <\/a><\/li>\r\n  <li><a href=\"\/en\/?page_id=91857\">census records<\/a><\/li>\r\n  <li><a href=\"\/en\/?page_id=854614\">genealogical records of the nobility<\/a><\/li>\r\n  <li><a href=\"\/en\/?page_id=958435\">genealogical records at regional state archives<\/a><\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>For convenience of our users being interested in genealogy, we offer reference\r\ninformation on the <a href=\"\/en\/?page_id=989746\">administrative-territorial division of\r\nBelarus.<\/a> <\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Those who want to search their family history or obtain copies of vital records (data\r\non births, marriages or deaths), should consult the <a href=\"\/en\/?page_id=6\">Contact List\r\nof Belarusian Archives<\/a>, select the individual archive (or several archives) according\r\nto the area and dates in question, and apply directly to the archive&#8217;s director. The\r\napplication should have the following data: full name of the applicant, citizenship, email\r\nand fax numbers, place of permanent residence (postal address), inquiry data, and payment\r\nguarantees.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>To maximize your chance for a successful search, you should specify all members of the\r\nfamily in question, record their exact or approximate dates of birth and death, religion\r\n(Orthodox, Catholic, Jewish, etc.), place of residence, with indication of modern or\r\nhistorical administrative-territorial division if possible (gubernia\/province\/region, uezd\r\n\/district, village etc.), their estate or occupation if known (noble, town-dweller,\r\npeasant, merchant, etc.), maximum information possible. <\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Related Internet Resources<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>A town-by-town inventory of archival documents on Jewish genealogy is available in a\r\nsearchable database on the internet (at no cost to inquirer) on the Miriam Weiner Routes\r\nto Roots, Inc. website at <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.rtrfoundation.org\/\">www.rtrfoundation.org<\/a>.\r\nThis website includes extensive information about Jewish genealogical sources in Belarus,\r\nseveral chapters written by Belarusian archivists, maps and map resources for Belarus and\r\nother valuable information. The website consists of two parts: (1) a 350-page book and (2)\r\na searchable database of archive inventories for towns in Belarus, Poland, Ukraine,\r\nMoldova and Lithuania.
