A Ceremonial Meeting to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the State Archival Service in Brest Region, 9 February 2010, Brest

On 9 February 2010, the Brest Region Executive Committee holds a ceremonial meeting to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the State Archival Service in Brest Region.

The state archival institutions in the western regions of the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic (BSSR) were created in accordance with Resolution of the BSSR Council of People’s Commissars No. 182 dated 11 February 1940, “On organization of archive business in Baranovichi, Pinsk, Vileika, Brest and Belostok oblasts of the BSSR”.

From 1940, the archive network of Brest Region included the Archive Division of the BSSR NKVD/MVD Administration (People’s Commissariat, and from 1946 Ministry, of Internal Affairs) and three regional archives – in Baranovichi, Brest and Pinsk. Until March 1960, these institutions were included in the system of the BSSR NKVD/MVD, then came under jurisdiction of the Brest Region Executive Committee, and since 2006 in the system of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Belarus.

Presently, the archive network of Brest Region includes the Archives and Records Management Division at the Brest Region Executive Committee, four state archives (the State Archives of Brest Region and local state archives in Baranovichi, Kobrin and Pinsk) and 19 personnel archives (three municipal and 16 district archives). As on 1 January 2010, the number of archivists and managerial staff employed in the Brest Archive Network is 96.
