Staff Excursion ZGAPol: Bobruisk, Krasny Bereg, and Zhilichi

Staff members of the Polotsk Zonal State Archive are continuing their tradition of educational excursions. This latest trip allowed employees to experience Belarus’s rich history and culture by visiting three landmark sites.

The itinerary began in Bobruisk, one of the country’s major industrial centers. Famous for its unique local symbols, the city delighted visitors with its distinctive monuments to beavers. These animals are depicted as dapper 19th-century townspeople, reflecting the era when the city’s central pedestrian street took shape.

As they toured the city, the archivists were greeted by colorful characters. The Commandant of the Bobruisk Fortress described the stronghold’s pivotal role during the War of 1812. The massive bastions, which remain standing today, are impressive in their scale and power, offering a glimpse into the magnitude of the historical events that unfolded there.

Shura Balaganov, a jovial and humorous character, invited everyone to rub the «Golden Calf» for good luck and ultimate happiness.

In the «Jewish Courtyard», the hospitable Aunt Sonya served authentic local cabbage pastries, while Yoshka, a cheerful innkeeper, taught the group the lively «7:40» dance to the accompaniment of a live violin.

The group strolled along Sotsialisticheskaya Street—the famous «Bobruisk Arbat»—soaking up the unique atmosphere of this historic street.

The tour continued with a visit to the 19th-century Kozell-Poklevsky estate in Krasny Bereg. The manor house’s exterior features turret spires, mansard roofs, and gargoyle figures incorporated into the main entrance. Inside, the halls serve as a guide to the history of interior architectural styles, blending elements from over ten different styles—including Gothic, Romanesque, Rococo, Mannerism, Baroque, and Classicism.

The Kozell-Poklevsky estate is the only one in Belarus to incorporate the rare «Alhambra» (or Moorish) style into its design.

The program concluded with a trip to Zhilichi. The surviving Bulgak Palace and Park complex stands as a striking example of Classicism. Its preserved interiors—featuring lavish décor, stucco molding, and wood carvings—along with the picturesque park and the ponds of the Dobosna River, allowed tour participants to appreciate the grandeur of the estate culture of the past.
