The State Archives of the Vitebsk Region organized a thematic event, «The Power of Law – The Power of the State»
In the lead-up to March 15, Constitution Day, as part of the «Archives for School» campaign, staff of the State Archives of the Vitebsk Region held a thematic event, «The Power of Law – The Power of the State», for first-year students at the library of the Vitebsk Order of the Badge of Honor State Academy of Veterinary Medicine. The event included lectures on «The History of Our Constitution» and «Symbols of the Past – The Pride of the Present», and a quest.
In her speech, «The History of Our Constitution», Tatyana Buevich, Deputy Director of the State Archives of the Vitebsk Region, noted that March 15, 1994, is one of the key dates in the history of sovereign Belarus. On this day, the Constitution was adopted, which, for the first time in the history of Belarusian statehood, enshrined the republic’s status as a unitary democratic social state governed by the rule of law. Its creation was preceded by the Statutes of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Soviet-era Belarusian constitutions of 1919, 1927, 1937, and 1978, which laid the foundations of Belarusian statehood.
In her presentation on the topic «Symbols of the Past – the Pride of the Present», Elena Bondareva, Head of the Information Retrieval System and Automated Archival Technologies, noted that, according to Article 19 of the Constitution, the symbols of the Republic of Belarus as a sovereign state are its national flag, national emblem, and national anthem.
The students learned many interesting things about national symbols. The history of each is linked to the Vitebsk region.
The students were reminded that the standard image of the national emblem and flag of the Republic of Belarus is kept in the National Archives of the Republic of Belarus, and the standard recording of the national anthem is kept in the Belarusian State Archive of Film, Photo, and Sound Documents.
To reinforce this material, first-year students of the Veterinary Academy completed the quest «Do I Know Our Constitution?» The winners were awarded commemorative gifts – publications from the State Archives of the Vitebsk Region and souvenirs.
