39th Anniversary of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Accident

April 26, 2025 marks 39 years since the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster. This date has gone down in the history of Belarus and all of humanity as one of the most tragic pages of the 20th century.

The Chernobyl disaster is reflected in a number of works of Belarusian culture and art. The funds of the Belarusian State Archive-Museum of Literature and Art contain many creative documents of literary figures that are dedicated to this topic: the novel by Ivan Shamyakin «The Evil Star», the documentary story by Vasily Gigevich and Oleg Chernov «The Waters of Gorkiya Began», the story by Yuri Stankevich «The Pruzi», the story by Taisiya Bondar «We Have an Egg and a Son», the story by Ivan Ptashnikov «Lions», the play by Nikolai Matukovsky «Unfortunate Events», the poem by Vladimir Skorinkin «Nobody Mows the Meadows Near Chernobyl», the poem by Nikolai Kupreev «26 Beauties», the poem by Gennady Pranevich «Chernobyl Epilogue», various articles and notes. On this day, we pay tribute to those who stopped the radiation disaster, prevented the development of the catastrophe, sacrificed themselves, fulfilling their professional duty. The Chernobyl tragedy should forever remain in our memory as a harsh reminder of the need to learn the lessons of the past and prevent a repeat of the catastrophe, which to one degree or another affected the life of every Belarusian family.

The virtual exhibition «26 beauties – Day of the Chernobyl tragedy» is available for viewing on the BSAMLI website.
