Presentation of the collection «Belarusian Archive of Ancient Letters» in 2 parts at F.Skorina Gomel State University

On April 18, 2025, a presentation of the collection «Belarusian Archive of Ancient Letters» compiled by I.I.Grigorovich more than 200 years ago took place at F.Skorina Gomel State University. The event was organized by the Belarusian State Archive-Museum of Literature and Art (hereinafter referred to as BGAMLI) and the Department of Philosophy and Special Historical Disciplines of Gomel State University.

The presentation of the publication in Gomel has an important and at the same time symbolic character. The author-compiler Ivan Ivanovich Grigorovich (1792-1852) was an Orthodox priest and theologian, whose fate was closely connected with Gomel. Here he worked as a rector of the theological school and became an active member of the Rumyantsev Circle, an informal association of historians under the patronage of the philanthropist, Count N.P.Rumyantsev. Participation in the circle revealed his talents as an archeographer and historian.

The presentation was attended by E.A.Makarenko, director of the BGAMLI, S.A.Cherepko, dean of the faculty of history and intercultural communications, M.F.Shumeiko, professor of the department of source studies of the history faculty of BSU. The event aroused keen interest among teachers and students-historians of Gomel University, representatives of other educational institutions of the city of Gomel, as well as the Gomel Orthodox Diocese.

The publication of the «Belarusian Archive of Ancient Letters» is a significant event in the cultural life of Belarus. The collection is the first archeographic collection of documents on the history of Belarus of the 16th-18th centuries. The publication will be of interest to researchers, teachers, students and anyone interested in the history of Belarus. BGAMLI expresses hope that the publication will contribute to the further study and popularization of the historical and cultural heritage of our country.
