The history of the liberation of Vitebsk with a screening of a documentary film prepared by BGAKFFD was presented by the employees of the State Archives of the Vitebsk Region to the staff of the State Institution «Vitebsk Regional Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology and Public Health»

As a result of the Gorodok operation (December 13-31, 1943), the troops of the 1st Baltic Front captured the Vitebsk fortified area from the northwest, cut the Vitebsk-Polotsk railway behind Staroe Selo. From the southeast, the troops of the Western Front were 14 km from Vitebsk (along the Orsha highway).

Soviet troops began to prepare for the liberation of Vitebsk.

The first attempt to liberate Vitebsk was made in February-March 1944. And although it was unsuccessful, it made a significant contribution to the further history of the liberation of the city from occupation. The results of the Vitebsk offensive operation (February-March 1944) played a fatal role in weakening the German units. The 3rd German Panzer Army of the Wehrmacht, defending the Vitebsk bridgehead, suffered heavy losses and was forced to commit all its reserves to battle. The successful repulsion of the Soviet offensive led to the German command becoming confident in the invincibility of the built defense system, which led to the Wehrmacht being unprepared for the June offensive of the Soviet troops in 1944.

The Vitebsk-Orsha operation (June 23-28, 1944) was an integral part of the Belarusian strategic offensive operation (Operation Bagration).

The Red Army had numerical superiority on the ground and in the air. Since Hitler forbade leaving Vitebsk, three German divisions were surrounded by the evening of June 24. And in the first half of the day on June 26, 1944, the remnants of the German division surrendered, and the city was captured. Captain Myasoedov raised the red flag on the House of Specialists (now located on Dovatora Street). Four more German divisions were surrounded to the southwest of Vitebsk and surrendered after strong resistance on June 26-27.

On July 23, 1944, a partisan parade was held on Sennaya Square.

The deputy director of the State Archives of the Vitebsk Region spoke about these events during a meeting with the staff of the State Institution «Vitebsk Regional Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology and Public Health». During the meeting, a chronicle-documentary film «Liberation of Vitebsk» prepared by BGAKFFD was shown.

In the course of the conversation, information about the YouTube channel «BGAKFFD» was announced.
