Events within the framework of the campaign «Archives – to school», dedicated to the Day of National Unity in the institution «State Archives of the Gomel Region»

On September 6, 2024, in the institution «State Archives of the Gomel Region» as part of the republican campaign «Archives – to school» events dedicated to the Day of National Unity for students and teachers of the UO «Priborsky State College» were held.

The students were met in the foyer by the director of the archive Andrei Nikolaevich Sushchevich, who spoke about the work of the archive and presented to the audience the permanent banner exhibition «Unconquered Gomel Region». Then, the students and teachers were presented with the exhibition on the stands «United Belarus – Historical Justice», which was located in the reading room of the archive.

In his lecture, the director of the archive, Andrei Nikolaevich Sushchevich, told the students that the national holiday – National Unity Day – was established on June 7, 2021 by Decree No. 206 of the President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Grigorievich Lukashenko. The holiday is dedicated to the anniversary of the Polish campaign of the Red Army, which began on September 17, 1939, as a result of which, in particular, Western Belarus was annexed to the Belarusian SSR. Andrei Nikolaevich Sushchevich dwelt in detail on the historical facts that formed the basis of the holiday, for example, he noted that the Belarusian people were divided against their will in 1921 under the terms of the Riga Peace Treaty and the events of September 17, 1939 made it possible to restore the unity of the Belarusian people. In his lecture, the archive director drew the attention of those gathered to the fact that National Unity Day primarily symbolizes the national, state and territorial integrity of Belarus, and emphasizes the significant historical foundation of modern statehood.

Next, a tour of the archive storage facility was conducted for all participants of the event, during which Victoria Rudenko, archivist of the 2nd quarter of the department of accounting and preservation of documents, introduced the children to the basic conditions for the permanent storage of documents, as well as to the methods of converting documents into electronic format.

The children showed great interest in the archive, asked many questions and expressed a desire to visit the archive on a regular basis in the future.
