Signing of an agreement between BSAMLA and the National Library of Belarus about a joint project
In 2024, the Belarusian Orthodox Church celebrates a significant date – the 200th anniversary of the publication of the «Belarusian Archive of Ancient Letters» compiled by Archpriest John (Ivan) Grigorovich. Thanks to this work, the beginning of Belarusian archeography was laid as a scientific discipline designed to search, describe and publish historical documents.
Ivan Grigorovich is the first Belarusian archaeographer, famous historian, local historian, linguist, teacher, preacher, archpriest.
In 1821, I. Grigorovich began researching the archives of Mstislavl and Mogilev, as a result of which the work «Belarusian Hierarchy» appeared in 1824. A continuation of this activity was the preparation of the first Belarusian archaeographic collection «Belarusian Archive of Ancient Letters», the first part of which was published in 1824, the other, fully prepared for publication, unfortunately remained unpublished and is stored in manuscript in BSAMLA. Separate documents of the first and second parts were reprinted in «Acts of Western Russia».
On May 28, 2024, the Belarusian State Archive-Museum of Literature and Art (hereinafter referred to as BSAMLA) together with the National Library of Belarus signed an agreement on the preparation of a joint project for the facsimile publication of the manuscript of the 2nd part of the collection of documents «Belarusian Archive of Ancient Letters».
On the part of BSAMLA, the agreement on the joint project was signed by the director of the archive-museum, Elena Aleksandrovna Makarenko. The authorized person from the National Library of Belarus was the head of the publishing department, Victoria Viktorovna Kalistratova.
The parties expressed their readiness, within the framework of their competence, to combine efforts, knowledge, business reputation, professional skills and connections in the implementation of the project in order to introduce it into scientific, public and general cultural circulation.
