Career guidance meeting at BSU
On February 28, 2024, the director of the institution «Belarusian State Archive of Film, Photo and Sound Documents» A.N. Gonchar held a meeting with 1-3 year students of the specialty «Historical and Archival Studies» of the Faculty of History of BSU. The dialogue took place within the framework of joint career guidance activities of the Department of Archives and Records Management of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Belarus and the Department of Source Studies of the Faculty of History of BSU.
During the conversation, Andrei Nikolaevich Gonchar introduced the students to the specifics of the work of a unique institution, the only custodian of the audiovisual history of the country in the Republic of Belarus. The audience was presented with unique projects created recently by the archive team. Vivid examples, known throughout the country and abroad, were «Open Access» and «Without Retouching» (together with ATN), «Open Film Archive», as well as the international Film Marathon «Boomerang in Minsk», during which Belarusian schoolchildren received a unique experience in creating films based on archival newsreels.
The director of the archive focused on the fact that the archive building is currently undergoing a major overhaul with elements of modernization, as a result of which comfortable workplaces will be provided for employees. Active work is also underway to acquire and install modern technological equipment to improve the technological processes carried out in the archive.
The meeting participants became interested in the prospects for employment and further work in the archive. Many questions were devoted to the processes of digitizing audiovisual documents and their subsequent use, as well as the prospects for the institution’s project activities.
Of particular interest to young people was the demonstrated presentation material about the history, structure, specifics and main activities of the archive.
The head of the Department of Source Studies, S.N. Khodin, introduced the guest to the specifics of training personnel at BSU for the archival industry.
The Department of Archives and Records Management of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Belarus, which includes the institution «Belarusian State Archive of Film, Photo and Audio Documents», is the largest customer of personnel for the archival industry of Belarus. Cooperation between the Faculty of History of BSU and archival institutions of the Republic of Belarus is an essential element in the training of archivists.
