On January 12, 2024, as part of the «Archives to School» campaign, the institution «State Archive of the Gomel Region» (hereinafter referred to as the State Archive) took part in a single lesson «Ola – the sister of Khatyn», dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the tragedy of the Belarusian village, held on the basis of the State Educational Institution «Secondary School» No.75 of Gomel».
The main goal of the event was to deepen students’ knowledge about the historical past of the Belarusian people, as well as to form ideas about the genocide of the Belarusian people during the Great Patriotic War.
During a single lesson, students talked about the genocide of the Belarusian people during the Great Patriotic War, the preservation of historical memory and the tragedy in the villages of Ola and Khatyn.
During the conversation, senior researcher at the Department of Information, Publication and Use of Documents by the State Archive, Drozdova A.M. urged the children not to be indifferent to this terrible tragedy that occurred in the village of Ola on January 14, 1944, which claimed 1,758 lives, of which 950 were children. After the war, the village of Ola was not revived, leaving a deep imprint in the memory of our people.
In addition, schoolchildren took an active part in the blitz quiz, figured out why it is necessary to preserve and transmit the historical truth about the Nazi crimes committed against civilians during the Great Patriotic War, and a video was shown to the children within the framework of the above topic.
At the end of the event, all those present observed a minute of silence in memory of those killed during the Great Patriotic War.
