On September 12, 2023, on the eve of National Unity Day, a solemn event was held in the reading room of the institution «State Archive of the Gomel Region».

A historical overview of the events of September 17, 1939 and their significance in the history of our country was given by the director of the archive A.N.Suschevich. In his report, he noted that the holiday was established by Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus dated July 7, 2021 No. 206 and is celebrated annually on September 17.

Andrei Nikolaevich emphasized that National Unity Day is a significant event in the fate of our country and the strengthening of Belarusian statehood. This day became an act of historical justice in relation to the Belarusian people, divided against their will in 1921 under the terms of the Riga Peace Treaty. The unity restored in 1939 allowed Belarus to survive the Great Patriotic War and take an honorable place in the international community, becoming one of the co-founders of the United Nations.

A detailed story about the significant historical events that led to the creation of a strong independent Belarusian state was accompanied by a presentation «The Origins of the National Unity Day Holiday». During the presentation, the archive staff got acquainted with a unique document: the decision of the Gomel City Council of Workers’ Deputies dated September 7, 1945 «On the preparation and holding of September 17, the day of reunification of the Belarusian people in a single Soviet Belarusian state», which is being shown for the first time. This topic aroused keen interest among archive workers.

In addition, on September 16 and 17, the archive team plans to take part in ceremonial events dedicated to National Unity Day and City Day.
