The State Archive of the Vitebsk Region was thanked for its active participation in the preparation of the event – the evening-portrait “The years were lived honestly and not in vain”, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the statesman, honorary citizen of Vitebsk Sergey Mikhailovich Shabashov, and for ensuring the safety of the personal fund Shabashova S.M.

Sergei Mikhailovich Shabashov was born on May 1, 1923 in the village of Draguny, Liozno District. In 1940 he graduated from the Liozno exemplary secondary Belarusian school. Became a student of the Vitebsk Medical Institute.

During the Great Patriotic War, he joined the partisan detachment “Sailor” of the brigade “Aleksey” and went from an ordinary partisan to deputy commissar of the partisan detachment.

After the end of the war, he worked as the first secretary of the Liozno, then Vitebsk district committees of the LKSMB. Since 1956, he held responsible positions – the first secretary of the Oktyabrsky district committee of the CPB of Vitebsk, Ezerishchensky, Kobrinsky district committees of the CPB. Since 1965, he worked as secretary of the Brest regional committee of the CPB, head of the propaganda and agitation department of the Central Committee of the CPB.

The return to Vitebsk took place in 1971. He headed the regional party organization. Under his leadership, the educational buildings of the Medical Institute and the Pedagogical Institute, the Vitebsk Hotel, Victory Square, bridges across the Western Dvina and Vitba were built, Lenin Street and Moskovsky Prospekt were reconstructed, the construction of a regional hospital began, and trolleybus lines were opened. Giants of petrochemistry grew up in Novopolotsk, large enterprises of radio electronics in Vitebsk.

Sergei Mikhailovich was elected a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR (1971-1975). In 1990 S.M. Shabashov was elected a People’s Deputy of the BSSR.

Sergei Mikhailovich Shabashov died on April 12, 2007.

The institution “State Archive of the Vitebsk Region” stores the personal fund of Shabashov S.M. (f.10894-p). The fund has 60 cases for 1944 – 1995: documents of official, state, social activities (texts of reports, speeches at scientific-theoretical and practical conferences, sessions of the Supreme Council of the BSSR, republican seminars; texts of articles, interviews in newspapers and magazines; brochures ; mandates of a delegate to the congresses of the CPSU and the CPB; certificates of honor and thanks; congratulatory addresses of party, Soviet, Komsomol bodies, enterprises, institutions, military units; photocopies of Honorary Diplomas of the Supreme Council of the BSSR, work book, military ID, certificates); photographic materials.
On May 4, 2023, the State Institution “Vitebsk Regional Library named after V. I. Lenin” hosted an evening-portrait “The years were lived honestly and not in vain”, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the statesman, honorary citizen of Vitebsk Sergey Mikhailovich Shabashov .
