On the renaming of streets in Mogilev in honor of the first manned flight into space

April 12 is World Aviation and Cosmonautics Day. The date was set to commemorate the first manned flight into space. On this day in 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on the Vostok-1 spacecraft launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome and for the first time in the world made an orbital flight around the planet Earth.

The event was of great importance for the further development of astronautics and all mankind. The space theme at this time became the most popular. A manifestation of respect and appreciation for people associated with astronautics was the renaming of streets in many settlements of the Soviet Union.

So, in Mogilev, already on April 25, 1961, Lagernaya Street was renamed Yuri Gagarin Street, and on September 5, 1961 Kokkinaki Street – Cosmonauts Street.
