On February 15, 2023, a round table dedicated to the Day of Remembrance of Internationalist Warriors was held in the reading room of the State Archive of the Gomel Region (hereinafter referred to as the SAG).

The event was opened by the director of the GAGom Sushchevich A.N. noting that on this day in 1989 the last Soviet soldier crossed the bridge of the Amu Darya border river near Termez, the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan was completed. The Afghan war claimed the lives of 14,453 Soviet soldiers, of which 771 were citizens of Belarus, 11,654 were wounded, 10,751 became disabled.

In continuation of the raised topic, the head of the department of information, publication and use of documents by the GAG Aleksandrovich Zoya Anatolyevna spoke. In her speech, she acquainted the staff of the archive with documents and photographs of the heroes-internationalists who had fulfilled their duty outside the Fatherland.

Summing up the work of the round table Sushchevich A.N. noted that the memory of the Afghan war is kept by memorial complexes and monuments from different regions of the country. The memorial complex “Island of Courage and Sorrow”, opened in Minsk in August 1996, is a symbol of memory of the tragic page in history. The center of the memorial complex was the monument “To the Sons of the Fatherland who died outside of it.”

In addition, Andrei Nikolayevich today took part in a city rally at the memorial to soldiers-internationalists.
