Internationalist Soldiers Remembrance Day. New acquisitions to the Belarusian State Archives of Film and Photo Documents

On February 15, the Republic of Belarus marks the Internationalist Soldiers Remembrance Day.

On the eve of the commemorative date, the Belarusian State Archives of Films, Photographs and Sound Recordings received photographic documents from Nikolai Cherginets, Belarusian politician, writer, Honored Worker of Culture of the Republic of Belarus. A total of 503 items were received, showing Nikolai Cherginets’ career in various government posts, 77 of which reflect his service in the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan as a military adviser to the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs. Nikolai Cherginets spent 3 years in Afghanistan, participated in more than 200 operations, organized the defense of Kabul and its environs, for which he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, was wounded and shell-shocked. He was also engaged in literary activities there. In particular, he wrote the novel “Sons”, translated today into more than 10 foreign languages. The photographs from 1984-1986 show the consequences of fighting in Afghanistan, the deployment of military equipment, events dedicated to the Soviet-Afghan friendship, the visit to Kabul of the delegation of the International Department of the CPSU Central Committee for relations with the communist parties of the capitalist countries, the Soviet military base, the Soviet commanders who served in the limited contingent of Soviet troops in Kabul.
