The Rechitsa Regional State Archives presents a document—a letter from a Great Patriotic War veteran to his family in the Bragin District
The archives of the Department of Labor, Employment, and Social Protection of the Population of the Bragin District Executive Committee hold a letter from Great Patriotic War veteran Alexander Danchenko to his family, dated July 9, 1944 (F. 186. Op. 3. D. 92. L. 232-232ob), in the village of Dublin, Sperizhsky Village Council, Bragin District. The letter contains the following lines:
«Hello, Anyuta! Hello, daughters!
This is the second day I’ve been walking through the recently liberated territory of Western Belarus. The enemy has given up on our pressure and has reeled in. We’re heading west toward Pinsk. Yesterday we passed Stolin. It used to be a beautiful little town, but now it’s gone, only ashes and ruins. The people have been evacuated. It’s deserted. In the evening, civilians began to appear. [They were] very happy to see us. Stopping to rest, we were invited into a house, where we were treated to vodka, meat, honey, and milk.
After washing up, [we] got to work. We processed the award paperwork for the participants in the battles. We only got about two hours of sleep, and at dawn we were moving west again. The corpses of dead Germans, their weapons, and uniforms were strewn along the road. The devils had finished the fight».
The subsequent fate of the letter’s author is unknown.
