In honor of the Year of Belarusian Women, the Zonal State Archives in Polotsk presents a document on the preparation and implementation of events dedicated to the 825th anniversary of the feast day of St.Euphrosyne of Polotsk
June 5, the feast day of St. Euphrosyne, Abbess of Polotsk, is a holiday not only for the residents of Polotsk but for the entire Orthodox world.
The tragic events of the 20th century led to the closure of the Spaso-Euphrosyne Monastery. For many years, the monastery was subject to destruction.
In 1990, the first nuns arrived in Polotsk from the Zhirovichi Monastery. Repair and restoration work began in the churches and buildings of the newly reopened monastery. In less than two years, the monastery was transformed: the Church of St. Euphrosyne and the Cathedral of the Exaltation of the Cross were restored, and the bell tower was reconstructed. In 1997, on the eve of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, a recreated Euphrosyne Cross, crafted by Brest master N.P.Kuzmich based on an ancient one lost during the Great Patriotic War, was ceremoniously delivered to the Spassky Monastery. In 1998, the chains of St. Euphrosyne were discovered.
We present to your attention the decision of the Polotsk City Executive Committee dated March 25, 1998, No.217, «On the preparation and holding of events dedicated to the 825th anniversary of the day of remembrance of Euphrosyne of Polotsk in June 1998» and the Plan for the preparation and holding of city events dedicated to the 825th anniversary of the day of remembrance of E. Polotsk on June 4-5, 1998, in Polotsk.
