On May 7, 2026, the State Archives of the Gomel Region held a Courage Lesson for seventh-grade students at Secondary School No.75 in Gomel. The lesson commemorated the 81st anniversary of the Soviet people’s victory in the Great Patriotic War.

Specialist Maya Vaschenko spoke to the students about archival documents related to the genocide of the Belarusian people and the work of the Extraordinary State Commission for Identifying the Damage Caused to the National Economy of the Gomel Region by the Nazi Invaders. The theme of women’s heroism during the war was also highlighted. Tens of thousands of Belarusian women worked as nurses, scouts, and home front workers, and more than 450 natives of the republic were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

Yuri Lebedev, Chairman of the Belarusian Union of Officers of the Novobelitsky District of Gomel, participated in the lesson. Yuri Lebedev shared the memories of his father, a veteran of the Great Patriotic War. He also told the students about higher education options for those who have decided to dedicate their careers to military service.

The lesson focused on preserving the historical truth and memory of the events of the Great Patriotic War and the need to recognize and be proud of the heroes of their country.

Finally, the students watched the BGAKFFD documentary «Hero Fortress» about the heroic defense of the Brest Fortress.
