Memory Captured in Film: A Film Lecture by the National Historical Archives of Belarus was Held at Secondary School No.27 in Minsk

On April 30, 2026, a memorial event dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant tragedy was held at Secondary School No.27 in Minsk. Sergei Nikolaevich Ryndin, Deputy Director of the National Historical Archives of Belarus, addressed the students and conducted a special screening of the documentary film «Chernobyl: Chronicles of a Tragedy».

The film, based on materials from the Belarusian State Archive of Film, Photo, and Sound Documents, sparked keen interest among the students. Unique archival footage allowed the students to see the first days after the disaster, the dedicated work of the liquidators, and the changes the accident brought to life and the environment of our country.

During the film lecture series, Sergei Ryndin emphasized the importance of preserving the historical truth about the events of 1986. The discussion of the film helped schoolchildren understand the scale of the man-made disaster and the invaluable contribution of those who, at the cost of their own health, minimized its consequences. Turning to objective archival evidence became a lesson in courage and responsibility for the future for the young people.

Holding such meetings in educational institutions emphasizes the importance of intergenerational continuity and helps students better understand the value of documentary heritage in preserving the history of their native Belarus.
