March 5, 2026, marks the 130th anniversary of the birth of Kondrat Kondratovich Krapiva (real name Atrakhovich), poet, playwright, People’s Writer of the BSSR, academician of the BSSR Academy of Sciences, and public figure.
Fables became the main genre in Kondrat Krapiva’s work. His creative biography began in 1922 with the publication of feuilletons and satirical poems. His plays, such as «Who is the Last Day», «The Pyatun of the Zhanyans», «The Gate of Unknown», and many others, later gained wide recognition.
Furthermore, K.K.Krapiva made a fundamental contribution to the development of Belarusian linguistics, laying the foundations of modern Belarusian lexicography. A promotional video for the exhibition «I Am a Pyakuchka-Krapiva» has been posted on the BGAKFFD YouTube channel to commemorate the 130th anniversary of Kondrat Kondratovich Krapiva’s birth.
Currently, the Belarusian State Archive of Film, Photo, and Sound Documents holds over 190 photographic documents from 1915 to 1982, over 60 film documents from 1939 to 2013, and approximately 20 sound recordings from 1954 to 1972, all related to the life and work of Kondrat Krapiva.
These photographs include portraits and family photos of the writer, as well as photographs taken during writers’ and party congresses, meetings of the BSSR Academy of Sciences, and meetings with readers.
The archive’s collection contains the film footage «Decade of Belarusian Literature in Moscow» (1939) and «Presentation of Awards to Artists of the BSSR by M.I. Kalinin» (1940). These are the earliest film footage depicting playwright Kondrat Krapiva. Kondrat Krapiva’s work was later reflected in the newsreels «Savetskaya Belarus», «Naviny Dnya», «Mastatstva Belarusi», «Navuka i Tekhnika», as well as in the documentaries «Novy Minsk» (1953), «Staronki Gistoryi Minsk» (1957), and «Belarus Today» (1975). During the writer’s lifetime, two documentaries were made about his work: the first in 1961 by director S.Braude, the second in 1983 by director M.Kupeeva.
After the writer’s death in 2010, director S.Gaiduk again turned to his work. One episode of the video program «Video Encyclopedia of Belarus. Kandrat Krapiva» (2013) was also dedicated to Kondrat Krapiva.
The audio library contains recordings of Kondrat Krapiva’s speeches at writers’ congresses and ceremonial gatherings, as well as radio broadcasts dedicated to his work.
Kondrat Kondratovich Krapiva died on January 7, 1991, and was buried in Minsk at the Eastern Cemetery.
Today, the Institute of Art History, Ethnography, and Folklore of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus bears his name.
