On a tour at the State Archives of the Gomel Region as part of the national «Archives for School» campaign

On October 6, 2025, archival specialists conducted a tour at the State Archives of the Gomel Region for 11th-grade students from Secondary School No.75 in Gomel. The tour, held on «Archivist Day», was aimed at developing the students’ interest in the archivist profession.

Svetlana Primakova, Head of the Document Accounting and Preservation Department, spoke to the students about the archivist profession and the tasks and functions of archives. The students learned about the formation of the National Archival Fund and the systematization of documents accepted for permanent storage.

In the archives storage facility, Leading Archivist Marina Bortnovskaya introduced the students to the preservation processes for documents of historical, cultural, scientific, or administrative value. She also showed the schoolchildren interesting historical documents from the last century.

In the archive laboratory, archivist Galina Gromyko demonstrated the process of repairing archival documents to the students. The students saw how the various stages of repair are performed on specialized equipment.

Archivists are the custodians of history, as all original documents are stored in the archive. Therefore, this profession is not only very interesting, but has always been important and necessary. In Belarus, archivists can be trained at both higher education institutions and colleges, as well as specialized courses. Such excursions help graduating students answer the question, «What should I do?» and more easily navigate the world of professions.
