National Unity Day. Archivists from the Zonal State Archives in Molodechno presented a virtual exhibition, «A Day in History», dedicated to the reunification of Western Belarus and the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic

On September 17, our country celebrates National Unity Day. On this day, following the Red Army’s liberation campaign against Western Belarus, which had been ceded to Poland in 1921 under the Treaty of Riga, the Belarusian people were reunited.

On November 2, 1939, the Supreme Soviet of the USSR granted requests to admit Western Belarus to the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic, and on November 14, 1939, the Law on the Inclusion of Western Belarus in the USSR and its Reunification with the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic was adopted. Thus, the territory of Belarus regained its integrity and returned to its centuries-old historical tradition.

On the eve of this significant day, Olga Berezovskaya and Maria Mechkovskaya, archivists from the Zonal Archives’ Document Use and Publication Department, presented a thematic exhibition project, «A Day in History», to ninth-grade students at Secondary School No.12 in Molodechno. The exhibition was also shown to staff of the Zonal State Archives in Molodechno as part of National Unity Day.

«The unity restored in 1939 allowed Belarus to survive the Great Patriotic War, take its rightful place in the global community, and become a founding member of the UN. National Unity Day serves as another reminder of the resilience and self-sufficiency of the Belarusian nation and statehood, fostering a sense of belonging to the country and the destiny of every citizen», Maria Mechkovskaya emphasized in her speech.
