On the lesson conducted by the institution «State Archives of the Gomel Region» within the framework of the republican campaign «Archives – to School»

On May 8, 2025, senior researcher of the State Archives of the Gomel Region M. Vashchenko took part in the lesson «We are bequeathed to protect this world» at the educational institution «Gomel State College of Builders». She told the children about the importance of the partisan movement in Belarus during the Great Patriotic War. Maya Vashchenko showed the students archival documents of partisan heroes – award sheets, which contain information about the awarding and activities of partisans in the detachment. She told about the partisan Varvara Vyrvich, known as «bandit Katya». Varvara Vyrvich fought in the Stalin partisan detachment in the Dobrush district of the Gomel region and skillfully organized intelligence and a system of liaisons. This brave girl had many successful military sabotage operations under her belt. One of these sabotage operations was the explosion of an ammunition depot and a food warehouse in Novo-Belitsa. The Germans promised a large reward for her capture. The State Archives of the Gomel Region contains Varvara Vyrvich’s award sheet with her nomination for the medal «Partisan of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree». In the documentary film of the Belarusian State Archive of the Fatherland «Belarus Partisan Republic», which was shown to the students, Varvara Vyrvich, together with the partisans, enters the liberated city of Dobrush.

The lesson was held in the format of an oral journal and was filled with performances by college students. They prepared stage numbers on military themes. At the end of the event, the participants honored the memory of the dead with a minute of silence.
