On the event held by the institution «State Archives of the Gomel Region» in the library-branch No.14 of Gomel

On November 25, 2024, as part of the «Archives – to School» campaign, employees of the institution «State Archives of the Gomel Region» held a lesson at the library-branch for students of the educational institution school No.75 of Gomel to celebrate the 81st anniversary of the liberation of the city of Gomel from the Nazi invaders.

Senior researcher of the archive Maya Valentinovna Vashchenko told the students about how the mined city of Gomel by the Nazis was liberated and what difficult tasks the sappers faced in clearing the city. The students learned how, risking their lives, the sappers defused explosive devices and mines. Thousands of Gomel residents’ lives were saved thanks to the difficult work of sappers, and from November 26 to December 17, all booby traps were defused. Next came the difficult work of clearing the Gomel region of minefields and unexploded ordnance. The city’s residents took direct part in demining the city by joining the ranks of the voluntary society OSOAVIAKHIM.

The students were interested in the photo exhibition of the State Archive of the Gomel Region on the liberation of the city of Gomel, which was designed by the archive staff.
