The Zonal State Archives in Orsha presents to your attention a virtual photo exhibition entitled «Unbreakable Union», timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics – a state that created an entire era of world development.
The exhibition presents photographs from the album dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the formation of the USSR in 1968, belonging to the fund of the Department of Culture of the Orsha City Executive Committee of the Vitebsk Region (F.1252. Op.1. D.127. Ll.1-34).
December 30, 1922 is considered the day of the formation of the USSR – the day when the agreement on unification into a union state was approved at the First All-Union Congress of Soviets and entered into force. The approval of the treaty legally formalized the creation of a new state consisting of 4 union Soviet republics: the Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic, the Ukrainian Socialist Soviet Republic, the Byelorussian Socialist Soviet Republic and the Transcaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic. At the time of the collapse of the Union in 1991, there were already 15 union republics.
The era of the USSR has become a time of global changes in all sectors of the life of the state. One of the main achievements was the electrification of the country, the fight against homelessness, the elimination of illiteracy, free medical care and education. The time has come for great construction projects, the country has embarked on industrialization. The developments of domestic scientists related to agriculture – combating drought, mechanization, chemicalization and increasing productivity have gained scope. A new direction of science has been developed – nuclear physics.
“Five years – in four years!” – for many Soviet citizens, this motto was a way of life, because work in the USSR has always been held in high esteem. The country was proud of the labor exploits of the workers of the BAM and DneproGES, the Stakhanov movement.
The USSR had enormous weight in the world political arena and was recognized as a superpower. The position of the USSR has always commanded respect in the international community. In 1945 the Soviet Union became one of the founders of the United Nations. In addition, on the initiative of the USSR, important agreements were concluded: in 1949, the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance was established, and in 1955, the Warsaw Pact was signed.
The “genuine achievement of the Soviet era” was the flight into space of the first man – Yuri Gagarin and the leadership of the USSR in the world of space technology. Without the developments of engineers, physicists, chemists of the Soviet Union, the modern achievements of science and military technology would not have been possible. The names of Soviet musicians, actors, directors, ballet dancers, architects, artists and athletes are known throughout the world.
