Documents of the National Archives at the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Bar Association of the Republic of Belarus

On 7 July 2022, in the framework of the Congress of Lawyers of Belarus the National Archives opened the documentary exhibition “The 100th anniversary of the formation of the Bar of the Republic of Belarus”.

On 26 June 1922, the 3rd session of the Central Executive Committee of the Socialist Soviet Republic of Belarus decided to establish the Bar Association for criminal and civil cases under the People’s Commissariat of Justice and adopted the Statute of the Bar. The date of adoption of the Statute of the Bar is for many years celebrated by Belarusian advocates as a professional holiday. According to the current legislation of the Republic of Belarus only advocates can provide professional defense of the rights and interests of citizens and legal entities in courts. For over 100 years Belarusian lawyers have been adequately fulfilling the tasks of protection of honor and dignity of their fellow citizens.

Today, there is probably no person who at least once in his life has not used the services of a lawyer. It can be legal advice, protection of rights in court, execution of legal documents, drawing up contracts and many other things.

The thematic exposition prepared by the National Archives of the Republic of Belarus presents archival documents reflecting the process of formation and development of the Bar, when the state authorities of Belarus were searching for principally new forms of organization of criminal defense and legal aid to the population.

The National Archives has presented at the exhibition such unique documents as the Regulation on the Bar of 1922, instructions, orders of the People’s Commissariat of Justice, protocols of the Presidium of the All-Belarusian Bar Association, resolutions of the Council of Ministers of the Belarusian SSR, the Law of the Republic of Belarus “On the Bar”, etc.

The attendees at the documentary exposition were Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Belarus O. I. Chupris, Deputy Minister of the Justice of the Republic of Belarus N. M. Starovoitov, Chairman of the Belarusian Republican Bar Association A. I. Shvakov and more.
