To celebrate the Archivist Day, the State Archives of Minsk Region has prepared an exhibition of documents describing the Archive’s activity from 1919 to the present. The exhibition shows the letter concerning the establishment of the archives in Minsk in 1919 directed by the head of the Minsk Council Archive to the Commissariat of People’s Education of the Russian SFSR; a questionnaire form for Tishka Gartny (D.F. Zhilunovich) who studied in the reading room of the Minsk Historical Archive; an 1936 instruction for the protection of archival repositories at the Minsk branch of the Central State Archives of the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic etc.

On 4 October 2016 the Belarusian State Archives-Museum of Literature and Art hosted the Fourteenth Archival Readings dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the birth of the famous poet Maksim Bahdanovich (1891–1917), statesman and scholar Arkadz Smolich (1891–1938), and physician, public figure and journalist Ivan Tsvikevich (1891–1938).

On 5 October 2016 the National Press Center of the Republic of Belarus held a press conference on the topic of the Development of Archive Business in the Republic of Belarus dedicated to the Archivist Day.

Attendees at the press conference were Director of the Department for Archives and Records Management of the Justice Ministry V. Adamushko, Director of the National Archives of the Republic of Belarus V. Kurash, and Deputy Director of the Belarusian State Archives of Films, Photographs and Sound Recordings E. Grinevich.

The participants reported on the main issues related to the activities of the state archival institutions in the Republic of Belarus, the preservation and use of archival documents, methodical and procedural aspects in the work of the state archives.

On 30 September 2016 the Department for Archives and Records Management of the Justice Ministry of the Republic of Belarus held a board meeting to discuss the practices of the National Historical Archives of Belarus in the publishing field; preparation by the state archival institutions for 2016/2017 autumn-winter season; and work of the Department and the state archives in executing administrative procedures in the first half of 2016.

The board noted that the National Historical Archives of Belarus participates in various publishing projects since 1959. For this period the Archives has issued into print or participated in the preparation of 38 books. From 2001 the Archives published 13 issues of the “Arkhivarius” (Archivist) Compendium of Scholarly Reports and Articles.

On the second issue it was noted that preventive maintenance and repair have been completed to prepare the state archival institutions for 2016/2017 autumn-winter season. All the branch-owned objects – 33 buildings of the state archival institutions – have received passports certifying preparation for heat energy consumption in autumn-winter season.

Discussing the third issue it was noted that in the first half of 2016 the Department put down 416 Apostille stamps on the documents issued by the state archives in the Republic of Belarus. The state archives handled 5,354 applications for social and legal inquiries. 5,115 applications came from Belarusian citizens, 239 from foreign nationals.

An international scientific conference “25 years of the Commonwealth of Independent States: results and perspectives” was opened on 28 September 2016 at the Belarusian National Academy of Sciences.

The conference addressed the issues of economic interaction, scientific and innovation cooperation, expansion of contacts in the field of culture, sports, youth politics and other issues related to the development of the CIS countries.

Director of the Department for Archives and Records Management of the Justice Ministry, Vladimir Adamushko, took part at the conference and delivered a report on “The state archival institutions in the Republic of Belarus in the post-Soviet space. The main areas of cooperation as part of the Commonwealth of Independent States”.

A scholarly round table “The Republic of Belarus on the way of socio-economic reforms and strengthening of independence: the challenges and achievements of 25 years” was held on 27 September 2016 at the Historical Faculty of the Belarusian State University.

The scholarly agenda included the issues of social political and economic reforms, transformations in foreign policy, confessional and educational spheres in the Republic of Belarus.

Director of the Department for Archives and Records Management of the Justice Ministry, Vladimir Adamushko, took part at the round table and delivered a report.

Director of the Department for Archives and Records Management of the Justice Ministry of the Republic of Belarus, Vladimir Adamushko, took part in the session of the Council on Archives at the Federal Archival Agency of the Russian Federation, which was held on 20-21 September 2016 in Samara, Russia.

The Council’s session addressed the issues of providing public services by the state and municipal archives in the Russian Federation. V. Adamushko made a report on the practices of public services delivered by the state archives in the Republic of Belarus.

The International Council on Archives Quadrennial Congress took place in Seoul, South Korea on 5-10 September 2016. The Congress brought together over 2000 archivists from 114 countries. The Belarusian delegation was represented by Director of the Department for Archives and Records Management in the Republic of Belarus, V. Adamushko, Director of the National Archives of the Republic of Belarus, V. Kurash, and Director of the National Historical Archives of the Republic of Belarus, D. Yatskevich.

The main topic of the Congress – Archives, Harmony and Friendship: Safeguarding of Cultural Traditions, Justice and Cooperation in the Global World.

The congress themes included: the changing nature of recordkeeping in the digital age; opportunities for cooperation within and outside the archival milieu; the role of archives in the support of truth and justice; and opportunities for harmony and friendship in archival endeavors.

Mr. V. Adamushko, Director of the Department for Archives and Records Management in the Republic of Belarus presented a report on the topic “Archives heritage without barriers: interaction of state archives at various levels”.

Members of the Belarusian delegation took part in the session of the ICA General Assembly, plenary meetings, regional sessions and round tables.

During the congress members of the Belarusian delegation held working meetings with representatives of the state archival services from Azerbaijan, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and other countries, discussed the perspectives of mutual cooperation and mapped out concrete projects for the nearest time.

The State Archives of Brest Region has prepared an exhibition of documents, The Cultural Life in Brest. 1944 – the 1980s dedicated to the Year of Culture announced by Presidential Decree ¹ 522 of 28 December 2015.

The exhibition shows around 30 documents from the holdings of the Brest Region Executive Committee, Brest Town Executive Committee, local cultural authorities, Brest Region Theatre of Drama and Culture, the M. Gorky Brest Regional Library, the Brest Regional Local Museum etc., over 70 articles and reports from the regional newspaper “Zarya”, a number of photographs.

The displayed materials demonstrate the development of culture and arts, folklore, the activities of cultural institutions in Brest etc.

On 31 August 2016 the Belarusian State Archives of Scientific and Technical Documentation opened an exhibition dedicated to 80th anniversary of the birth of Leonid LEVIN, Honored Architect of the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic (BSSR).

The exhibition shows documents presented by the Belarusian Union of Architects and the materials from the Archives’ holdings.

The architect’s main works are the Khatyn Memorial Complex (1969); Memorial Complex “The Breakthrough” at Ushachi (1974); Memorial Complex “Condemnation of Fascism” (village of Shunevka,1983); Memorial to the Perished Jews of Gorodeya (2004); Memorial to Children who Died during the Great Patriotic War (Krasny Bereg, Zhlobin district, 2006); Monument to Yanka Kupala (Minsk, 1972); Monument to Yakub Kolas (Minsk, 1972); Monument to Prince David in David-Gorodok (2000); the building of the Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy (1968); metro stations “Lenin Square” (1984) and “Nemiga” (1990); reconstruction of the historical part of Minsk: “The Trinity Suburb”, “The Upper Town” etc.

Architect Leonid Levin is awarded two Honored Diplomas of the Supreme Council of the BSSR, the Diploma of the Supreme Council of the BSSR, the Order “For Achievements in the Federative Republic of Germany”.
