On 31 May 2016 Minsk hosted the 17th General Conference of the Eurasian regional branch of the International Council on Archives (EURASICA) and a regular session of the Consultative Council of the heads of the state archival services of the CIS member countries.

The EURASICA session discussed the issues of implementing the Plan of Action of the ICA Eurasian branch for 2013-2016, the Plan of Action for 2017-2020, the 18th International Congress of Archives in Seoul etc.

Participants at the EURASICA Conference were delegations from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Poland, Russia and Uzbekistan. Delegations from China, Latvia and Lithuania took part as observers.

The international scholarly conference “Archives in the world of information technologies” is held on 1 June 2016 as part of the 17th General Conference.

The Consultative Council of the heads of the state archival services of CIS countries discussed the issues of the development of archive business in CIS countries in 2015-1016, the inventory of the legal contract basis in the sphere of the Consultative Council, the activities of the All-Russian Research Institute of Documentation and Archival Science as a basic institution for professional training in archives and records management in CIS countries etc.

The Consultative Council brought together heads and members of the state archival services from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia.

Mr. V. Adamushko, Director of the Department for Archives and Records Management of the Justice Ministry of the Republic of Belarus has been elected Chairman of the Consultative Council.

The next sessions of the EURASICA and the Consultative Council of the heads of the state archival services of CIS countries will take place in Autumn 2017 in Armenia.








27 May 2016
From 24 to 26 May 2016 the Republic of Belarus hosted a visit by the state heraldists of Georgia. .As part of the visit, the Department for Archives and Records Management of the Justice Ministry of the Republic of Belarus held a meeting between the Belarusian and Georgian heraldists. Participants at the meeting were Mr. V. Adamushko, Director of the Belarusian Department for Archives and Records Management, Deputy Chairman of the Heraldry Council under the President of Belarus and the Council’s members M. Elinskaya and V. Lyakhor. The Georgian side was represented by Mr. Mamuka Gongadze, Deputy Chairman of the State Council of Heraldry at the Parliament of Georgia and Mrs. Victoria Sardjveladze, Head of the Administration and Finance Office.

During the meeting the colleagues informed about the activities of the Heraldry Councils in both countries, the history of their creation, principles of work and the results achieved in the area of heraldry in Belarus and Georgia. They also discussed the features and principles of the official heraldic examination, the procedure of establishing symbols and their use, and the perspectives of future cooperation.



26 May 2016
On 24 May the State Archives of Grodno Region hosted a creative delegation from Cheboksary, Russia. The delegation was headed by Vladimir A. Vasilyev, a film producer, script writer, Doctor of Culturology, Ph.D. in History, Professor at the Ulyanov State University of Chuvashia. The purpose of the visit is to make a TV documentary film about the underground anti-fascist organization led by Nikolay Volkov, known as “uncle Kolya’s group”, who fought against the enemy in the city of Grodno during the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945.

The Archive’s staff presented documents from the personal collection of Alexander Pleshevenya: photographs, reminiscences, letters, articles about the activities of Nikolay Volkov’s antifascist group.

The presentation of the film is scheduled to take place in September in Grodno.

A documentary exhibition was opened on 18 May 2016 at the History Faculty of the Belarusian State University (BSU) to commemorate the 75th anniversary since the beginning of the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945. The exhibition was prepared by the State Archives of Minsk Region together with the BSU History Faculty.

The exhibition was opened by Director of the State Archives of Minsk Region Yu. Romashko, Dean of the BSU History Faculty S. Khodin, and Dean Assistant for Scholarly Work at the BSU History Faculty A. Kokhanovsky.

Yu. Matusevich, head of records use and publication at the State Archives of Minsk Region introduced the exhibition to the public.

The exhibition shows historical documents in two thematic sections.

The first section shows the unique documents captured from the enemy: an original copy of the diploma of appointment as a village head (starosta); a certificate of an employee at the Central Trade Society Vostok; a patent and map for craftsman’s business issued by the finance department of the Borisov District Board etc.

The second section tells about the activities of the prominent resistance fighters V. Saichik and Z. Galo. Also, the exposition includes the certificate of award issued to the resistance fighter, Hero of the Soviet Union N. Kedyshko. The reports by partisan scouts and intelligence agents illuminate the situation in Nazi-occupied Minsk and show where the German garrisons were located. The exhibition also contains the list of army formations named after Minsk and the resolution of the meeting for awarding Heroes of the Soviet Union N. Kolychev and A. Burdeiny the title of the Honorary Citizen of Minsk.

On 12 May the Belarusian State Archives-Museum of Literature and Art opened an exhibition dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the birth of historian and writer Mikola ERMALOVICH (1921 – 2000).

The exhibition is prepared by the archive’s leading researcher Viktar Zhibul and shows fragments from Ermalovich’s manuscrips, many photographs and documents related to his work and life.

The archive’s director Ganna Zapartyka told of Ermalovich’s life and the history of creation of his personal fonds, which numbers 325 files (1,914 documents) basically for 1922-2000 years. A literary critic and historian, professor Adam Maldzis shared his recollections of M. Ermalovich and donated to the museum a part of his collection of photographs portraying the figures in literature and art, and a capsule with the soil from the burial ground of the 19th century writer Yan Barshcheuski. A scholar and journalist Anatol Astapenka, the author of the book about Mikola Ermalovich, told of his relationships with the famous historian and their joint participation in the social and political life of the country.

On 27 April 2016 the Department for Archives and Records Management of the Justice Ministry held a board meeting to discuss the issues of the amount and composition of permanent and personnel records held by government institutions and other organizations as on 1 January 2016 and about the fire prevention system in the state archives in the Republic of Belarus.

On 22 April 2016 the National Library of Belarus opened an exhibition of documents to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl NPP disaster.

The authors of the exhibition are the National Archives of the Republic of Belarus and the National Library of Belarus with the participation of the Belarusian State Archives of Films and Photographs. The exposition also features documents from the Russian State Archives of Contemporary History.

Among the attendees at the event were Director of the Department for Archives and Records Management V.I. Adamushko, Director of the National Archives of the Republic of Belarus V.I. Kurash, Director of the Belarusian State Archives of Films and Photographs V.V. Balandin.

On the 30th anniversary of the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the employees of the State Archives of Minsk Region have prepared an exhibition of a single document entitled “CHERNOBYL IS OUR PAIN”.

This document describes the radiation situation in Minsk region after the Chernobyl NPP disaster as it was on 12 April 1989 and summary data about the inhabited places in Minsk region in the area of high radioactive contamination in 1989.

The exhibition runs until 29 April 2016 at the hall of the State Archives of Minsk Region.

Share your experience, the importance of your work and show the archives profession is fun, inclusive, varied and your expertise helpful to everyone. Under the theme “Archives, Harmony and Friendship”, organize right now, an exhibition, a slide-show, a film screening, open your department to the public, explain your work, raise the profile of your colleagues and how they can help other departments in your institution or your company: It is entirely up to you to select a project for this 2016 International Archives Day. The list of events you can do is endless.

ICA International Congress 2016: "Archives, Harmony & Friendship" 5-10 September, Seoul

The International Council on Archives Quadriennial Congress, in Seoul, South Korea, from 5-10 September 2016, will consider the theme of "Archives, Harmony and Friendship." In keeping with the theme of archives, harmony and friendship, records and archives professionals around the world are encouraged to submit proposals on the conference themes, which include: the changing nature of recordkeeping in the digital age; opportunities for cooperation within and outside of the archival milieu; the uses of and role of archives in support of truth, justice and reconciliation; and opportunities for harmony and friendship in archival endeavours.

The conference will also include presentations on the topic of native peoples and their relationship both to their own records and archives and to the work of non-native communities in recordkeeping and archives management. Presentations will also explore management of records and archives in the Korean context as well as the initiatives and achievements of ICA members around the world. Finally, the conference will also provide a forum for new professionals to present their thoughts on records and archives issues. The goal of the conference is not only to address challenges but also look for opportunities and achievements: to build a framework for continuing harmony and friendship across the archival world.

On 19 April 2016 the employees of the State Archives of Grodno Region took part in the round table on the Topical Issues of the Confessional History of Belarus, organized by the Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno, the department of Belarusian history, archaeology and special historical disciplines.

The round table included a presentation of monographs “Against the liquidation of the Uniate Church in Belarus in 1780-1839” by S.V. Morozova, “Kościόl katolicki na Bialorusi 1939-1991. Od znisczenia do narodzenia” by E.S Yarmusik and the collection of published documents “The Grodno Orthodox Eparchy 1921-1939. Documents and materials”, prepared by the State Archives of Grodno Region.

The participants discussed the issues of confessional history, source studies and the perspectives and priorities in the development of historical science in Grodno region.
