State Archives of Gomel Region

Historical background

The Archives was established in November 1922 as the Mogilev-Gomel Archival Bureau of the Gomel Province Executive Committee, which was reorganized as the Gomel Province Archival Repository at the Gomel Province Public Education Department in May 1923, and as the Gomel Province Archival Bureau in November 1923. 

In January 1927, the archival bureau was reorganized as the Gomel Okrug  Archives of the Central Archival Administration of the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic (BSSR); in July 1930, as the Gomel Division of the Central Archival Administration of the BSSR. In February 1933, this was made the South-Belarusian Division of the Central Archival Administration of the BSSR; in March 1936, the Gomel Division of the Central Archives of the BSSR; in April 1936, the Gomel Division of the Central State Archives of the BSSR.

In July 1938, the archival division was reorganized as the Gomel Regional Archives; in March 1941, as the State Archives of Gomel Region.

In World War Two, during the German occupation from the mid-1941 to late 1943 the Archives did not function.

On October 15, 2001 the Archives received its present name of the State Archives of Gomel Region.
