Genealogical records of the state regional archives
Genealogical records are available at all regional archives of the Republic of Belarus.
They are preserved here in considerable volume except the Mogilev State Regional Archives
which lost most of its fonds during World War II.
The documents kept at the archives touch upon almost the whole 20th century and
concern the time when Belarus existed as part of the Russian Empire and part of the Union
of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).
There is a wide range of documents concerning activities of various departments (both
civil and military). Of the most informative sources for genealogical researches are the
vital records and various data on taxpayers, voters, public officials, persons subject to
the draft, and persons suffered during World War II. There is also some information on
property, in particular the records on house ownership. A separate group of records is
presented by household books which contain the lists of villages’ citizens with
information on their arrival to the village and departure. There are also archival records
from the educational, land, court, and religious archives, as well as archives of
different administrative agencies dating back to the periods of the Polish rule in
Belarus, 1921-1939, and German occupation, 1941-1944, and more.
With the help of our index you can define file codes of the materials containing
genealogical information for a specific year. The records are grouped according to
the average unit in the administrative division of the Russian Empire, Western Belarus,
and USSR: uezds, povets, and districts (raions).
