Historical background

The Archives was established as the Party Archives at the Gomel Regional Committee of the Communist Party (of Bolsheviks) of Belarus in March 1940.

In August 1941 the Party Archives was evacuated to eastern districts of the Soviet Union; the considerable part of documents was destroyed in German air raids.

After the liberation of Belarus the remaining documents were transferred to the Archives of the Party History Institute at the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus.

In September 1947 the Archives resumed its work as the Party Archives at the Gomel Regional Committee of the Communist Party (of Bolsheviks) of Belarus. In 1982 the Archives acquired records of the Party and Komsomol organizations of the Gomel province and region for 1920-1941 (in all, 86 341 files) from the Archives of the Party History Institute at the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus.

On March 1, 1992 the Party Archives was reorganized into the Branch of the Gomel Region State Archives.

On September 20, 1996 the Archives was made the State Archives of Public Organizations of Gomel Region.
